TAK-573
is an investigational drug being studied as a treatment for multiple myeloma that has not responded to currently available standard treatments. TAK-573 has not been approved for multiple myeloma in this country or any other.
TAK-573 is a targeted drug therapy that is capable of binding to two proteins found on the surface of cells, CD38 and interferon alpha receptor. CD38 is expressed at high levels on the surface of myeloma cells and at lower levels on other white blood cells. Interferon alpha receptor is also expressed on the surface of myeloma cells as well as many other cells in the body. TAK-573 binds more tightly to the CD38 protein, which then makes binding to interferon alpha receptor possible. This mechanism should enable the targeted binding of interferon alpha receptor only on cells that also express CD38. Binding of TAK-573 to interferon alpha receptor on both myeloma and white blood cells is expected to elicit anti-tumoral effects.
TAK-573, which offers robust anti-tumor activity, including complete response (CR). Even though CR does not imply cure, but at least increases probability of it.
